Founding Principles of Touch&Play:
Exploring the edges of CI
One of the original and ongoing questions behind contact improvisation research are various variations of the Question: “what happens when two bodies meet in space?” This investigation has lead to close to 45 years of ever evolving physical dialogue passed on from skin to skin, body to body to all those who have had the fortune of stumbling across it. A few years ago however I wondered what would happen if we slightly re-framed the question and instead would ask what happens when two humans meet in space. Not only in their full physical splendor but with their messy emotions, confused inner dialogues, unresolved power issues, hidden needs, sexual desires, and their fears and fantasies all thrown into the dance. From this The Touch&Play Project was born.
Come and join me on a fast forward journey of the past 8 years exploring the edges of contact improvisation through this new lens. We will start by covering the founding Touch&Play principles (e.g. consent, Non-Violent Communication, authenticity, mindfulness, edge play, game theory). This common discourse will help us build a safe and invocative space to play with a wide range of energies from the T&P color spectrum and use these to enrich our dances and take our interaction beyond the physical into the alchemical. We will also take some time to discuss the implications of this research on our community and ask where we could take it next.
Liquid Love (Oil Action)
Liquid Love is a collective experience exploring the sensuality of flowing skin to skin contact using warm organic oil. The concept is simple: we will pour warm, fine, neutral oil on to your skin, from where it will spread out over your whole body and form a lubricious substance, which allows you to float in a sea together with other oily bodies. Everyone is invited to respect their own rhythm and limits to touch and nudity.
We invite you to move and allow yourself to be moved without intentions or sexual orientation. Releasing our usual desire to take action on erotic sensations and thoughts we invite you to be present with them and to relax into the energetic flow of the bodies around you. This is a place where you can love and be loved in an impersonal and unbound manner and above all a place to super charge your soul.
Dani Hayes is a Medical Doctor, public health scientist, eco-anarchist and practical idealist. He’s been playing, dancing, meditating and conversing CI for over a decade and actively sharing his curiosity and knowledge and doubts for the past eight years.. He is the founder of the Touch&Play Project, which explores the edges of Contact Improvisation by inviting our (al)chemical bodies into the dance. Through artistic and academic research he hopes to highlight the potential of CI as a tool to create authentic connections with oneself and the other by bringing it into play, communication, BDSM, therapy, education, sexuality, somatic mindfulness and more.
